Cub Scouts is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for boys in kinder-5th grade. Its goal is to develop boys’ character, encourage good citizenship, and foster teamwork, all in a fun, educational setting that helps boys come to appreciate the outdoors. The boys enjoy games, try their hand at crafts, and learn through activities. The boys can check out a wide variety of interests and fields, such as crafts, sports, magic, photography, aircraft, archery, woodworking, model building, first-aid, and nature.

Cub Scout Pack 74 meets at Santa Rita School. We meet as a “pack” (the large group) of about 65 boys once a month on a weekday evening. Each pack meeting has a theme, such as a campfire and skit night, or a meeting in which they build crafts. In some months, we will also have a weekend pack activity. For instance, we plan an overnight trip, such as a campout, each quarter. We have also stayed overnight on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier, Chabot Space Center and Observatory, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Pinewood Derby is always a favorite activity. The boys build and race their own wooden cars. In the spring, the boys build model rockets and launch them into the sky. The boys also participate in occasional community service projects.

The boys also meet in “dens” (small groups) of boys their age. Dens are typically 8-14 boys. Parents in the dens choose when and where to meet. In our pack, dens typically meet once a month in the evening at the Santa Rita Multi. Dens give the boys the opportunity to make friends and enjoy activities and trips in a smaller group setting.

Boys can join at any time during the school year. For more information, please contact Eric Hwang at eyhwang@yahoo.com

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

The Santa Rita troops are a part of the Girl Scouts of Northern California. For information, please go to www.girlscouts.org
